This is a photograph of one of seven American Bitterns that I encountered at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge on 25 May 2003.  Matt Whitbeck would find fledglings of this species on the refuge on 6 June 2003, providing the first documented breeding record on the upper Texas coast since the 1940s.
